Episode 20: Taiping Sentral: Dull and Boring

Over the years, Taiping had a massive transformation. From Fajar Kamunting to Giant and from Tesco to Taiping Sentral(TS). Taiping is no more an unpopular city to visit. The birth of TS has made Taiping a hot and popular city. Kenny Rogers, Sushi King, Starbucks, Cineplex… you name it all. In the early 90’s I can still remember that there were only two shopping complex:- Fajar and The Store.

First of all, I would like to congratulate the management of TS, because Tpg finally has its own Cineplex after 15 years of absence. Furthermore, I am truly grateful that Tpg has such popular food outlet such as Kenny Rogers and Sushi King. Moreover, there is also a mini stage located at the center of TS. Kids as young as 5 can show of their talent by singing, dancing or playing musical instruments.

Now, let’s go straight to the point. My description about TS surely makes you think that it is a perfect place to go. As for me, I don’t think so. I would say that TC is dull and disappointing. Don’t get mad at me first. Please let me explain why.

Do you noticed the shops at TS? Do you know that majority of the shops are selling clothes, cloths, and shoes? I know that those three things have a high demand from customers. So its not wrong to have a few shops of it. But, its awfully too a lot at TS! TS is not like Midvalley Megamall at K. L. Midvalley is big and spacious. So it can afford to have many shops selling clothes. Too many clothing and shoes stalls will definitely makes TC a dull place to go. TS just do not have enough variety. Take a look at Tesco. Although Tesco is not as popular as TC but people still goes there. Why? Because Tesco has a lot of variety such as bookstore, game shop, playground, and etc.

As you all know Starbucks is indeed a popular coffee shop throughout Malaysia. But not at Taiping. The price of one cup of coffee is almost equivalent to my one day of food expenses. Of course the reason why the price is super expensive is bcause the coffee beans used is imported. Hey, here is Taiping la! People with low or average income will just come during the festival seasons. And in ordinary days, people will just come once a blue moon. As a result, Starbucks will have any income. This will eventually lead to bankruptcy. Another reason might due to high rent. So, to sum it all Starbucks can only survive in a short terms but not in long terms.

Instead of having majority stalls of clothes and shoes, why don’t a bookstore a TS? Maybe MPH or Kinokuniya, since Taiping do not have any major bookstore other than Popular. I’ve been to MPH and KInokuniya, and there are all sorts of books in it. If you are a bookworm definitely you wont stop going to TS. I am sure that it will attract more ppl to TS. When TS was building, I really hope that it will have a major bookstore in it. But it turns out to be a no to me. (Sob). I am really disappointed.

Teenagers these days just couldn’t live without technologies. So why don’t a computer or camera shop opened at TS? Although I’ve been there for 5 times, I’ve yet to see one. Who doesn’t like video games? As you all know, games has made a big impact in teenager’s life. Since PS3 already launched its campaign in Malaysia, I wonder why TS do not have any video games shop? If there is a video shop selling PS3 at TS, it will sure be a hit among video game freaks.

Another reason why I say that TS is dull because it does not have any souvenir shops. Shops selling souvenirs definitely can attract customers especially teenage girls. As you all know that teenage girls really like stuffed toys, key chains and other cute stuffs. Moreover, visitors from other place that come to TS can buy souvenirs for their loved ones, relatives and friends. Last but not least, why don’t a playground be opened at TS? Take a look at the playground at Tesco. Everytime I went to Tesco I would see that the playground will be full of kids. From what I observed, the food court at TS is always empty. Such a big space wasted! A playground for kids definitely completes a perfect picture of TS.

People going to TS mainly because of the presence of Cineplex and other popular food outlets. I really hope that in the future, TS would be having those attractive stores. I would like to say sorry if my negative remarks about TC has provoke or hurt you.

I hope u read this very soon. I haven't felt so ...... since ern wei. It's TAIPING SENTRAL by the way. TS.

Your explanation of:

1) TS just do not have enough variety. Tesco has a lot of variety such as bookstore, game shop, playground, and etc.
2) Instead of having majority stalls of clothes and shoes, why don’t a bookstore a TS?
3) why don’t a computer or camera shop opened at TS? You wonder why TS do not have any video games shop.
4) TS is dull because it does not have any souvenir shops.
5) why don’t a playground be opened at TS?

All these....I tell you why.

Because TESCO has already got all of them!

Have you ever wondered how it would be like to have TESCO and TS side by side just a few walks away selling and having same things? NOW THAT IS THE REAL WASTED SPACE AND WASTED CASH!

What TESCO got, TS don't have. PLaygrounds, souvenir shops, video game shops, etc....
What TS got, TESCO don't have.
Cinema, branded clothes, sushi king, kenny roger, etc....

You want buy what ma go to the respective place to buy la! Both got same things side by side where can! Together they can provide Taiping with as many things as possible ma! Ma eh.

2nd point.

TS don't call for which outlet to have in it. Interested outlets who want to rent and do business at TS proposes and TS have to approve it or reject it. That also depends on those companies whether they think that doing business in Taiping is good or not. Too bad for you that BIG SHOTS like MPH and KANINEKUNIYA didn't make it. Maybe they not interested to do here or what I don't know. But if TS could get whatever shop it wants to do business here, you think logically la, it being a main attraction in Taiping, you think it dowan to have big shot shops selling here ah? Got a number of good shops such as sushi king and branded clothes to sell here also should be happy d la!

3rd point.

You don't like Starbucks ma dun drink la. Taiping ppl dun like to spend so much I know, u don't like ma go Prima drink lah! You think Taiping Sentral so "mall-like" and high class punya place want do another Prima ah? Where flies fly here and there and drinks cost about RM1 and food about RM2, waiters all dirty and sweaty looking with black-black towels hanging on their shoulders wiping every single table no matter clean or dirty. Then the whole TS would look so clean and nice and suddenly at the corner there 1 practical kopi shop. Look so alien.

Some people in Taiping want drink Starbucks wan ma....And people outstation who come to Taiping can enjoy Starbucks oso ma...At least that would make KL or Penang ppl feel like home. At least oustation ppl come Taiping oso can go to TS and walk about just like how they did back in their hometown and have a drink at Starbucks like they usually do there. Starbucks serves one of the finest coffee available, just deal with the price which is proportional to its quality lah. People who know their coffee would appreciate it more than others who don't, including you and even me. But I respect Starbucks, the only branch in Taiping currently. And a Kopi Peng at Prima should satisfy you instead.

4th point.

About PS3 and technology shops, TS got some shops such as the one selling video cams, digicams and stuff, OSIM shop oso got. VIdeo games leh, u go TESCO lah ok. By the way, TS got YuYi Video Centre oso you didn't mention. 1 thing is, people often look for something to criticise but not something to appreciate.

5th point.

Got souvenir shops and mini-stalls along the lane at TESCO. Just walk over there and hug all those plush toys u want la.

6th point.

Although I love TS, but I must admit that its food court is a failure. That is wasted space, and perhaps so far, the only thing bad about TS. It could have been used for something else better. By the way, playground already got at TESCO. And just opposite the cinema which you went with us just not long ago....an entertainment centre will open soon. So there will be much joy, fun and plenty of entertainment there. Just wait lah.

7th point

Ya, too many clothes shop is another problem too. But in the beginning, how many shops can TS attract lah? It's just the beginning and the only shops they attracted r mostly local clothes shops. Good for them for being able to get the likes of Sushi King and Kenny Roger's Federer. But here's what I think will happen in the near future. Taiping Sentral will soon get more publicity and would attract more BIG COMPANIES' attention to do business here. Then they would be closing down chaplang shops to make way for better shops. It might be possible for ur MPH to open soon. We just don't know when.

Love the cinema. It's very very good and sadly, underrated by certain people who looked down on "non-TGV or non-GSC cinemas". I'm proud and thankful and appreciate it. More attractive stores may come soon, keep your hopes up high and stop dissing TS.

dear mun keong,
i hope you will not feel offended with my comment.
you can delete my comment if you wanted to do so. =P
before I start, I would like to do a little bit of correction on your post.
Please give a accurate information. this is because Taiping Central(TC) does not exist in the town named Taiping. It is Taiping Sentral.
let me comment paragraph by paragraph.

"Do you noticed the shops at TC? Do you know that majority of the shops are selling clothes, cloths, and shoes? I know that those three things have a high demand from customers. So its not wrong to have a few shops of it. But, its awfully too a lot at TC!"
well, i support with your 1st sentences since this kind of product is a very high demanding from customer. Why you said that too awful? I don't get it.
If you compare the size of Midvalley or any megamall in Kuala Lumpur with the average size shopping complex Taiping Sentral, the size between these two mall was too different apart. If you scale down the size of Midvalley Megamall to the size of Taiping Sentral, you might surprise with the number of clothing, shoes, and cloths shop compare to the Taiping Sentral.
this all for the for the 1st paragraph. =P

Hey here Taiping la!
Taiping people getting advance day by day. The income of worker at here increase from year to yea. Yes, i agree with you with expensive coffee bean which is specially imported bean. The bean used for the coffee is not any ordinary bean. It is best among the best and all the Starbuck cafe around the world is using the same coffee bean. This is why it is expensive. By the way, I believe that you assume that Starbuck failed to attract youngster or any customer to stop by to have a drink. But i will prove that you are totally wrong. If you observe properly, what kind of people you will meet at there? Couple? Family? or a group of teenagers? No! most of them are business people. Business minded people with laptop, PDAs or any device that WE haven't seen before. They are doing their business at there, this is called home-based-business. Many people become successful thanks to them. If you compare the WiFi strength with other Cafe's WiFi strength, Starbuck is the best among all.

Who say don't have any digital shop at TS? KY digital? Tesco already have one shop selling al the latest gadgets! If PS3 sell in TS, who will buy it? SOME of THEM! It's so expensive and where can we buy the game? Ebay?

yeah, teenage girls love that kind of stuff. Tesco already have a lot of souvenirs shop. You can ask "him" where to buy all the plush toy that suitable for girls!

"I really hope that in the future, TC would be having those attractive stores."
Yes, many big company are aiming for Taiping Sentral. Just waiting for their approval. Keep on praying hard and hopefully there will a better place for all the Taiping's people and so called Taiping-Sentral-Haters!
and please, do not label TS as a HIGH CLASS PASAR MALAM!

just deal with it

p/s: i comment in such way because i sick of people that condemn TS as a place of HIGH CLASS PASAR MALAM.

thx..
no offence
cuz this IS BLOGGING atmosphere

gosh.... pity mun keong. but i think there's truth in the harsh fact tat they spurt on ur face..

ya.. its right and good to criticize but its best if its ended with some building suggestions or proposal..

mk.. ts is not that bad.. think bout it.. if its not 4 ts tpg will still be known as a town of nite safari without cinema..

notice that things are developing gradually with tesco n giant n ts n rumours bout jusco.
ts is just another step in this adolescent growth yet to be experinced by tpgnites.

though it is not as GREAT as compared to ipoh penang or kl but look at the bright side. the beginning of all this signify tremendous interest in entrepreneur and investors proving that tpg is no longer a town for the retired. their interest in tpg proves that this is juz a trailer to some most substantial development yet to be seen by us.

its good tat mk pointed out that too many shops 4 shoes n shirts are there and its great becoz this kind of competition amongst them will only bring about cheaper price for the general.
and this can also ensure other investors wont invest too much on clothes n shoes as its already abundant in ts.

Still...TS rockzzz!! And mk is just sharing his point of view...at least he don't think he's some smartypants smartass....MK is good ppl...he got his goodness from his father...lol

I never seen starbucks in taiping been empty before, especially during weekends..its kinda pack compare to HERITAGE WHICH IS CHEAP but full with flies. ''Hey, here is Taiping la'' O so what..? i see more ppl at starbucks compare to that heritage. low & mid income...ok but why dont u mention bout high-income citizen? are you trying to say that all the tpg citizen are poor? i doubt so..if people dont like it fine dont need to go..but there are some who like it..there are lots of citizen living here in tpg, although its a small town..1/100 of them is enough to prevent starbuck from the so call bankrupt..hmm..really making me lol-ed hard

Once a again, I would like to apologized to “TS haters” hater especially FM and KL for giving negative remarks about TS. I didn’t expect to receive such comments from you guys. I definitely have no doubt in your debating abilities, FM. But I already know that such comments will spurt on my face b4 I wrote this post. Now, lets hear my point of view.

To FM,

In your comments, you said that the reason why TS do not have the shops that Tesco has is because they are just side by side. You added that if both the buildings are having the same kind of shops, then it would be wasting cash and space. Now, if TS do not have these attractive shops, how are you gonna expect it to compete with Tesco? People might just go TS for the sake of cinema and other popular food outlets. Since, the two buildings are side by side definitely there is a huge competition going on.

Maybe many of you think that I really beh syok TS. Dude, when did I say I beh syok TS?? If I were to beh syok TS, then in my post I would be swearing and cursing TS already lo. What I am trying to say that, TS is just lack of variety. Now back to the point. Lets compare the shops at Tesco and TS. Don’t take into account the Cineplex and other attractive shops at TS. That goes the same to Tesco. No KFC. No SR. I would definitely say that there are more different variety of shops in Tesco than in TS.

Since you say that Tesco already have two bookshops and a bookshop at TS would be a waste of space. Now let me tell you something. The bookshops that I mention (MPH and Kinokuniya) in my post are nothing like any bookstore you seen in your life. There are over thousands or maybe millions of books in it. If you been to any of the bookstore, you’ll know what I meant. Those bookstores offer a wide range of books of interest. And what do the bookstore at Tesco offer to you? Comics? Magazines? Those items I can buy them at any small bookshop at Taiping lo. Btw, its Kinokuniya not Kaninekuniya.

There are many types of souvenirs you know? Instead of having SM(giggles) Heritage, why don’t at least a souvenir shop be opened at TS? Yes, I know that there are souvenir shops at the lane of Tesco. But there are many different types of souvenirs man. For example, there are a lot of souvenir shops at Midvalley. Although there is a huge competition going on, the shops still survive. That’s bcause each of the shops are selling different types of souvenirs. That’s variety I am talking about! You don’t expect people to just to have one option at Tesco.

Why cant PS3 shop be opened at TS? People at TS mar no need to migrate over to Tesco if they wanted to purchased gaming materials. Although it just takes a few steps between TS and Tesco, but what if people parked their car at the far end of TS? (the spot where XY parked when we went to catch a movie) They will just have to walk very far.

To KL,

I don’t delete comments send in by my friends. Whatever comments you submit in whether it is good or bad, I’ll just accept it.

Lets talk bout Starbucks (SB). Since SB is so expensive, that’s why you only see businessman lepaking and doing business at there. And how many businessman you expect to come per day? About PS3, definitely hardcore gamers will buy. They will spend a lot of it cause it is the latest toy in town. Moreover parents these days will have no hesitation to buy for their kids. Btw, who do you reffering as“him” in your comment?

To Anonymous,

You never see SB empty before rite? But you also never see SB full before also wert. I am not trying to say that Tpg ppl are poor. I am trying to say that they rather spent their money on other things than just taking a sip on expensive coffees.

In the nutshell, I don’t really think that TS is a bad place to go. Its just that, TS do not have enough variety. Thanks for sending in your comments.

hmm it will be a bit long for mph to come to taiping, coz during the last MPH pameran in taiping, the hit wasnt that good. Still, that was like 5 years ago or more. So they may research on taiping again. BUt i think Kino will definitely not come coz KIno focuses on major towns that ensure them definite porfits.

yeah i agree with you that they should have Mph. however, i guess the mph ppl arent keen in opening a branch in taiping

And about the clothes shops here, yeah there are a lot. However, i think that a lot of the clothes outlets dont really suit our fashion taste. But its better than nothing. Haha
if not we will have to buy it all from tesco which only sells one brand which is Southfield? isit?

i think that ts is a great place for dining though, We have kenny, sushi, noodles, old town and pelita
haha

and the cinema is the best! haha
finally after so many cinemaless years!

poor mK got bombarded like ern wei
haha

but i think the reasons are kinda good. Its not one of those simply say kinda argument

anyway, MK, all hope is nmot lost yet. I think there are a few more shoplots that arent opened. so it may cater for what you wished. LOL

ah, they say there's somethng called sentral point that is going to be opened opp to tesco.

till then, let us all hope tat MPH will go there

LeongFM said...

If Taiping Sentral wanted to compete with Tesco so badly, it should have been built on the other end of Taiping instead of being side by side with Tesco la. That way TS can actually attract people far from TESCO instead of leeching at Kamunting.

That was your opinion that TS is meant to compete with TESCO.

Now, I strongly believe that TS is meant to work alongside TESCO to make Taiping as much of a complete ideal tourist attraction possible. Notice that their characteristics are very different, to provide each other with whatever each of them don't have.

1. TESCO is a grocery-heaven. IF TS were to compete with TESCO, it might as well sell groceries and produce their own "Taiping Sentral Choice" items!

2. Their little similarities are so that customers don't have to walk far to buy another thing. Although it's convenient to do that way, but they rather have more things different to sell than being exactly the same with TESCO. After all, it's variety people want, isn't it?

And TS is attractive by itself. YuYi, Concept Stores, OSIM, Cinema, sometimes there are special promotions or events at the center of the ground floor. If people just go TS for the sake of cinemas and popular food outlets, let them lah! That's a good thing isn't it? That's the advantage of TS that's why people would go for the sake of them! They make TS so wonderful and attractive. I too can say that people go to TESCO for the sake of groceries.

TESCO seems to have more variety because it is so much freaking larger and wider than TS. If it takes up so much space and yet has little variety, that's fishing dumb! As I always said before, they provide each other with whatever they don't have.

"Now, if TS do not have these attractive shops, how are you gonna expect it to compete with Tesco?"

"What I am trying to say that, TS is just lack of variety. Now back to the point. Lets compare the shops at Tesco and TS. Don’t take into account the Cineplex and other attractive shops at TS. That goes the same to Tesco. No KFC. No SR."

At first you say TS no attractive shops, now you say don't take into account of TS's attractive shops. It's clear that you disregard the PROs of TS and nail it for it's CONs.

"The bookshops that I mention (MPH and Kinokuniya) in my post are nothing like any bookstore you seen in your life."

I've seen those bookstores la ok. I know why you like it so much lah.

"If you been to any of the bookstore, you’ll know what I meant."

MACBeef! Perli me like frog under coconut shell oni. Tiunia****. I know exactly what u talking about lah. MPH and KK(Kino's Kokoi...lol joking la, Kinokuniya) are gigantic freaking large bookstores. I doubt there can be enough space for it unless they tear down the failing Food Court. I wan MPH and KK oso lah ma eh! But CR oso say that MPH came last time and din get much hit from Taiping ppl ma, just as how you would imply Starbucks to Taiping ppl.

About your souvenir shops instead of SMHairyass, *although SM may not be beautiful or attractive to u*, it is its investment that brought it there. Let it get its moneys worth and when it sees no future here, it will slowly rot. Then maybe your souvenir shop will pop there. Or if you're unlucky, TSHeritage will come or something else.

"Why cant PS3 shop be opened at TS? People at TS mar no need to migrate over to Tesco if they wanted to purchased gaming materials."

MIGRATE? lol wtf. So kua cheong.

I help Kok Leong abit.

"About PS3, definitely hardcore gamers will buy. They will spend a lot of it cause it is the latest toy in town. Moreover parents these days will have no hesitation to buy for their kids"

Now, this is as quoted from u. What if you change PS3 to Starbucks, gamers to businessmen, latest toy to finest coffee and forget the parents part. LOL.

FM: About Starbucks, definitely hardcore businessmen will buy. They will spend a lot of it cause it is the finest coffee in town.

I still don't know whether "hardcore businessmen" is the right term to use. Anyways, if you think Starbucks is too good for Taiping standard people, what more can you expect PS3 to be in Taiping? You know Taiping paling terror DVD cetak rompak 1 lah. That's your kind of Taiping standard right? Hardcore gamers spawn in places like KL la, not yet Taiping. But many businessmen are already here in Taiping and they are HARDCORE. lol. PS3 still no cetak rompak for its games yet lah...wait awhile more lah. Original games would kill people's wallets. So for now, Starbucks is a wiser choice than PS3-shop.

"Moreover parents these days will have no hesitation to buy for their kids"

Sure anot......don't assume that lah. Take that phrase and a price tag of the PS3 and tell it to ur dad see. I doubt I can ever see u again. lol. I would smackdown my son if he bising me over this.

It's impossible to keep up with alot of varieties in Taiping Sentral la, seriously. To provide Taiping with all varieties completely, it would need Taman Tasik to be filled with soil and flattened, all trees chopped down and a Megamall or even Times Square built there. Gone Taipnig Heritage, come Complete Variety. It's just too big for Taiping la. Just not Taiping Sentral. *TS alone kenot provide u completely.* And besides, there are many more varieties than just books and video games.

I'll leave Kok Leong and Anonymous' part to themselves lah. I believe they can and it's just a small part for them compared to mine anyways. lol. Ma fan sai lei dei la.

If I were to already expect this to come...I wouldn't write this post in the first place after seeing what happened to another TS-hater.

CR: poor mK got bombarded like ern wei. haha. but i think the reasons are kinda good. Its not one of those simply say kinda argument

yup...ern wei's is just too much. Wasted space, wasted cash, malay boutiques indian cinema wtf. So unreasonable. MK's thoughts are well-put and well-elaborated. Good job MK. I respect you for that. He deserves it more than MK la. I can see he attracted many Taiping ppl's attention with so few sentences. Of course, who wouldn't be angry after all those things he wrote? Lucky I gave 1 comment to him nia. 1 LONG comment as always. I still remember what he wrote in Chris Loo's S.H.E. lyrics post. As unreasonable as his TS post.

kok leong said...

to my dear mk, I'm so sorry if you felt offended. This is just my opinion as a customer and as Taiping's citizen.

souvenir shops, souvenir shops, souvenir shops, Why u keep mentioning about it? I don't think that shop will be a hit for the customer except for couple and teenagers.

to compare with Tesco and TS?
why don't you ask your parents about what is the differences between that two places? They would likely to say that, Tesco sell grocery stuff and TS just like a mall. IF you wanted to compare,
just imagine this, Tesco selling those fresh fish, mutton, chicken, garlic n etc and same goes to TS. DO you want to smell something awful like what you can smell from Tesco parking lot? If really TS selling those stuff to compete with Tesco, I doubt that everyone will say "LET's GO TO TAIPING SENTRAL"
and TS compete with TEsco? LMAO
If really do so, why Tesco provide them with HUGE parking lot??? THINK AGain baby~

Open 1 shop that sell PS3 in TS? why? Tesco already got 1 shop selling those stuff and KY DIGITAL also got sell PS3 if u order from them! IF they really open 1 shop in TS, IT JUST WASTE OF SPACE!

and about Starbuck?
haha... why don't you ask them.
not only businessman, other people like teenagers would go there to 'yam cha' with their friends! Maybe those "amore lang" would go there since they only know STARBUCK!
taking a sip on expensive drink? Who ask you to rush? People go there to enjoy and they can sit there for 1 whole day!

"About PS3, definitely hardcore gamers will buy."
HOW many hardcore gamers you expecting that Taiping have? 100? or maybe 20?

and to mk, sorry har... =P
Well, actually TS can support variety of shop but Snooker, KBOX and Cinema have already taken 2 floor of the shopping complex.
That's why you felt TS is lack of something and same goes to me!
need more fast food restaurant! no more KFC, PIzza hut, and McDonald
