Episode 28: RM1 bil just for 1 man??

Before I begin, let me explain the meaning of these terms as some of it might be unfamiliar to you guys. (I am referring to the non- football fan)

Transfer Window
Transfer window is the time where football clubs are able to buy or sell players in order to strengthen the squad. Its duration is 2 months and it begins in July (where the season starts) and in January. Once Transfer Window is closed, football clubs cannot buy any more players.

Barclays Premier League (BPL)
One of the famous English football league in England, where 20 football teams are in a race to win the league cup.

Manchester City
One of the BPL football club. Currently the richest club in the world.

Kaka/ Robinho/ Lionel Messi/ Cristiano Ronaldo
They are the some of the most expensive players in the world (for now). They are fast, skillful, talented, and always hungry for goals. Majority of them had won prestigious awards in football.

Ok. Lets begin.

Billions of dollars, pounds and euros may have been lost in the global financial crisis, but most of Europe’s leading football clubs are still poised to spend big during transfer window.

The club most unlikely to be unaffected by the credit crunch is Man City who may still be serious underachievers at the wrong end of the BPL, but became the world richest club when they were bought by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Nahyan of Abu Dhabi.

As a result, City broke the British transfer record to bring in US$50 mil (equivalent to 32.5 mil euros) Brazil striker Robinho on the last day of September transfer window.

He is determined to do that again in the January transfer window……

Due to the unlimited budget provided, Man City’s boss, Mark Hughes, had been linked with over 50 players which he wanted to bring them to the club such as Lionel Messi of Barcelona, Kaka of Ac Milan, Cesc Fabregas of Arsenal and Fernando Torres of Liverpool.

And he made the first step on Tuesday (last week).......

Man City offered a sensational 175 mil euros in a bid to land AC Milan’s superstar, Kaka.

Milan would pocket 100 mil euros and the Brazilian playmaker Kaka almost 75 mil euros for a five year deal worth 15 mil euros a season- or 280,000 euros per week.

That’s not all,

On Friday (last week), Man City increased their offer to a phenomenal 243 mil euros for Kaka. Unbelievable? You better believe it. The large amount of money could almost buy three F16 fighter which were priced at US$55 mil each. Moreover, it could also cover the GDP pf a host of nations. For example, in 2005, the Cook Island’s estimated GDP was US$ 183,200,200, the Marshall Island US$ 115,000,000 and Anguilla US$108,900,00.

City’s bid breaks down as follows:

1. 108 mil euros for AC Milan
2. 108 mil euros for Kaka’s wages including taxes. Kaka will be paid a net salary of 13.28 mil euros a year.
3. 27 mil euros in commission to brokers, middle-men and signing on fees.

AC Milan fans were totally furious about the news. They did not want their hero to leave San Siro(AC Milan’s homeground). Some of the angry AC Milan fans sprayed “Hands off Kaka” on the club’s main office. Not only AC Milan fans objected the transfer of Kaka, Liverpool striker Fernando Torres also thinks that the Brazilian star should not join the cash rich City.

“Man City are not the right team for Kaka,” Torres told the Daily Mail.

“Big players want to win trophies and Man City are not even in the race for trophies in England.”

And Torres insisted that winning trophies was more important than anything else for a player, including money.

“Imagine 10 years after you stop playing, you go back, you look around, you are not in any picture, you have no medals, no trophies; its like you played for nothing.”

“You may have a fantastic car, a fantastic home, but what does it matter? No players looks back and says, “I won more money”.”

Even with the presence of Robinho in the squad, Man City is currently number 11 in the BPL(7 wins, 4 draws and 10 losses). Moreover, they are just 4 points adrift from the relegation zone. How do you expect Kaka to be in this team?

As what Torres said, big stars want to win trophies. With Kaka in the team, will Man City win the premiership title? Or can Man City qualify for the Champions League? The answer is a big NO. Remember, this is Man City not Man United.

In the nutshell, Man City should not spend over 100 mil euros just on a single player. And Kaka should reject the offer from Man City although the deal is lucrative. After all he is the hero of San Siro and this is where he truly belongs. He still has a lot to offer to AC Milan as he is just 26 years old. Meanwhile Man City should spend the money wisely by buying a few players and not just one. Who knows the players bought to Man City can adapt themselves with other players, the tactics of the team or maybe with the manager as well. Thus, this will strengthen the squad and enable Man City to achieve a stable position in the table. Maybe in a few years to come, Man City will win the premier league title or even qualify for the Champions League. Good luck Man City.

Note: 1 euro=RM4.60
1 US$=RM3.50

If we converted the amount of money that Man City offered to Kaka to RM, then Kaka is worth around RM1 billion in Malaysia!!!! Can you believe that?? His salary for a year is almost RM60 mil!! This is totally insane. Can you imagine that?
